Increasing Family Complexity, Increasing Inequality among Mothers, Examining Variations between Black and White Single Mothers across the Earning Distribution Using Quantile Regression

(with Caroline Hanley, College of William and Mary)

While past research has documented the penalty American women incur for motherhood, variations in the penalty for racial/ethnic women, and differences in the motherhood penalty across white women’s earnings distribution, we do not fully understand wage inequality among mothers. Characteristics that mitigate the size of the wage penalty variations observed between mothers and childless women may exacerbate the inequality observed among mothers of differing socioeconomic statuses and relationship types.
