Server Access

The Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC) will be a resource for faculty with computationally intensive data needs.  It also has the capacity to be a virtual server for UMass departments and colleges, allowing secure data storage, remote access, and shared group software licensing. This service is projected to become available by 2013, with a pricing schedule still to be determined.

Data Programming Software

1. OIT maintains a list of supported software

This list tells you what version is supported, the level of support (low, medium, high) and the direction of support (increasing, not changing, decreasing).  See also http://www.umass.edu/statdata/software/index.html

Interviewing Resources from OIT

Basic training guides are available as PDFs through OIT comparing digital recording devices and reviewing software for audio and video editing:

Survey Software Programs
  • A well-known platform for creating online surveys is Survey Monkey.
  • SurveyGizmo is also popular and has HIPAA certification.
  • One of the most highly recommended softwares for designing surveys is Qualtrics.  UMass does not have a license for this software, but there is a free trial available for download at the website. (The Isenberg School of Management offers this software free to faculty and students.)
  • For an exhaustive list of other software available for online surveys, see this link.
Labs on Campus
  • ISSR: W37E Machmer is a 25-person training lab for use by ISSR-affiliated faculty and graduate students. Currently there are 10 laptops loaded with the following software: Stata 12, R, Adobe Creative, NVivo, Microsoft Office Professional, and MAXQDA. SPSS and SAS are loaded on a few. Contact Karen Mason for information.
  • Resource Economics rents out its Experimental Economics Computer Lab in Stockbridge Hall. All research done in this lab must be experimental, must financially reward subjects for decisions they make during the experiment, and may not involve deception.
    • There are 40 computers, 36 for subjects, and 4 in the control room for the experimenters.
    • They maintain a list of undergraduates who have signed up to be paid volunteers for experiments.
    • Contact Elizabeth Keegan.
Public Computer Labs

OIT maintains a calendar of current hours and real-time availability.

To use a classroom for teaching contact Marta Pluta at 413 577-0762.

Some important notes:

  • You need an OIT account to access these computers.
  • You may not save any files on these computers.
  • Linux is not supported in classrooms.
  • Instructors may request additional software installs.
