Upcoming Two-Day Summer Workshops

May

Modeling Emergence: Computer Simulation as a Theory-Building Tool
An ISSR two-day workshop at UMass
9:00 am to 12:00 pm May 14-15, 2013
Location: W13 Machmer Hall

This workshop will allow attendees to understand some of the goals and methods of social simulation, give them hands-on experience in experimenting on models, and point them to resources to begin using these tools in their own work.

Qualitative Research and Evaluation Design: Considerations and Tensions
An ISSR two-day workshop at UMass
9:30 am to 4:30 pm May 16-17, 2013
Location: W32 Machmer Hall

This workshop will provide a foundation for researchers who are new to qualitative research and evaluation design as well as an arena for exchange among those who have prior experiences.

Design and Implementation of Surveys
An ISSR two-day workshop at UMass
9:30 am to 4:30 pm May 22-23, 2013
Location: W13 Machmer Hall

During this workshop, after an overview of the survey process, the class will discuss the different types of surveys and their relative strengths and weaknesses, then will examine the “Dillman” method for designing surveys. The practical elements of implementing a survey, including the Internal Review Board process, will be discussed, as will data processing, storage, and validation. As much as possible, this workshop will be hands on and participants are encouraged to work on their own research project during the workshop.

Applied Regression with R for Social Science Researchers
An ISSR two-day workshop at UMass
9:00 am to 2:00 pm May 29-30, 2013
Location: ISSR Training Lab: Machmer W37E

This two-day workshop will get you comfortable running regressions in R and reading output. The first day will focus on multiple regressions and the tools needed to run them: importing and plotting data, specifying a model, checking model assumptions, reading output, and testing hypotheses. This session is aimed at researchers who have some experience with R, but need some help with multiple regression basics. The second day will focus on multiple regression extensions: estimating fixed and random effects models with panel data, and interpreting output from these models. On the second day researchers are encouraged to bring their own data to practice coding.

June

Organizing and Analyzing Qualitative Data with NVivo 10
An ISSR two-day workshop at UMass
9:00 am to 2:00 pm June 5-6, 2013
Location: ISSR Training Lab: Machmer W37E

This two-day workshop will get you started using NVivo to code and analyze qualitative data. The first day will focus on the basics: importing, organizing, classifying, and coding your data. This session is aimed at researchers who have never used NVivo and need help getting started with coding. The second day will focus on analysis: using a variety of queries to parse coded data. These analysis tools and techniques will be helpful to researchers who have used NVivo and have started coding. Users who already have some data to code will find these workshops to be the most beneficial, but sample data is available for those who do not have a full set of data.

Image-Based Fieldwork Methods
A ISSR two-day workshop at UMass
9:00 am to 4:00 pm June 13-14, 2013
(location to be announced)

This two-day workshop will familiarize participants and give them hands-on practice with doing photo elicitation interviews, subject-generated videos/photo projects, conducting interviews with video, and documenting social events with video. In addition, strategies for cataloguing and post-production of video will be addressed, as well as concerns regarding fair use, copyright, informed consent, and the ethics of visual representation in the digital age.
