Intermediate NVivo: Running Queries, Creating Classifications, and
Auto-Coding Transcripts and Spreadsheets
An ISSR Short Course by Jackie Stein
For those who have taken the NVivo Basics course or who have some experience with NVivo but would like to learn more, this course offers a few useful "next steps" for NVivo 10 users. This workshop will be especially useful to those who have already done some coding of their data; a sample file is available for those who have not. We will focus on specifying a variety of queries, creating and attaching classification data to nodes in NVivo, and using NVivo's auto-coding function to do some basic parsing of structured data in text and spreadsheet files.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own computers with NVivo 10 installed; ISSR laptops will also be available for use on a first-come, first-served basis (reserve a laptop when you register for the course). Note: NVivo currently runs only on Windows, but can run on Macintosh computers that are able to run Windows. Nvivo is available for free to SBS faculty, staff, and students who register here. It is also available free or discounted to SOM and School of Education affiliates—contact your department for more info. You can also contact OIT to find out if your department has a license. Finally, NVivo offers free 30-day trials of the full software on their website.
