Spring 2016 Methodology Workshop 10: Computing Bayes Factors in R

Tuesday, March 22, 2016 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm

Instructor: Andrea Cataldo

Description: Bayesian inference is an alternative to null hypothesis testing that has been increasing in popularity in recent years. The Bayes Factor is one commonly used method of evaluating evidence for or, importantly, against a given hypothesis. This workshop is designed to introduce participants to the Bayes Factor and demonstrate how to compute this statistic in R for hypotheses that would otherwise be tested with a one-sample t-test, two-sample t-test or ANOVA. We will also review how a Bayes Factor may be reported in a journal article. Participants should have some prior experience with R.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to

  • Better understand what a Bayes Factor represents
  • Compute a Bayes Factor in R using functions from the BayesFactor package
  • Report a Bayes Factor in a journal article
