ISSR Scholar Reception | Lori Holt (Psychology | Carnegie Mellon University)| March 2

Event date/time:

Friday, March 2, 2018 - 12:15pm to 1:15pm
Location TBA

Join us for an informal reception with Professor Lori Holt (Psychology | Carnegie Mellon University) on the occasion of her visit to UMass to collaborate with ISSR Scholar John Kingston (Linguistics).

Dr. Holt directs the Speech Perception & Learning Laboratory in the Department of Psychology and the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition at Carnegie Mellon University. Under Dr. Holt's direction, the lab uses a combination of psychophysics, cognitive science, computational modeling and neuroimaging to explore how the listeners decode complex sounds like speech. Current projects investigate the learning that occurs in acquiring the sounds of a second language and how representations of the native language interact with this learning; how listeners' "tune" their auditory perception to the statistical regularities of the sound environment; and how higher-level knowledge may influence early auditory object recognition and speech categorization.

This event is supported by the ISSR Scholars Program, promoting successful research and grants development for social science faculty across the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Dr. Holt visits UMass to collaborate with ISSR Scholar John Kingston (Linguistics).
