ISSR Methodology Workshop | De-Mystifying Bayesian Statistics

Event date/time:

Friday, April 20, 2018 - 1:30pm to 3:30pm
E20 Machmer Hall

Instructor: Andrea Cataldo

Description: This workshop aims to introduce participants to the basic principles of Bayesian statistics, an alternative to null hypothesis significance testing that has been increasing in popularity in recent years. Participants will receive hands-on experience computing Bayes Factors in R for hypotheses that would otherwise be tested with a one-sample t-test, two-sample t-test, or ANOVA. We will conclude by reviewing how Bayesian statistics, and the Bayes Factor specifically, may be reported in a journal article. Participants should have some prior experience with R.

Learning Objectives |  By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Better understand the basic principles of Bayesian statistics
  • Compute a Bayes Factor in R using functions from the BayesFactor package
  • Report a Bayes Factor in a journal article
