 ISA – Events

India has a very rich tradition of festivals. Our ancestors marked important occasions by breaking their routines, celebrating and socializing. It was a time for families and communities to come together, pray, dance, sing, feast and share joy. It is amazing how the same festivals are celebrated in different styles in different parts of India. Every Indian at UMass cherishes the good times spent with family and friends during these colorful festivals and events.

At ISA, we strive to reinvent this spirit of festivities and celebrations though our many events. They also capture the diversity amongst the Indians at UMass and help foster a better sense of community within them. At these events, a lot of talented students get together and participate with enthusiasm. Hence, they are clearly the best way to meet with new people who share similar cultural values. Here’s an incomplete calendar of events typically organized by ISA. Please check the events update to get the details for each event.

1. Fresher’s welcome party: End of August

The best way for the incoming students to interact with the seniors and know about their experiences. Nice way to get started on this interesting journey called Grad School.

2. Ganapati celebration: Beginning of September

This festival is typically celebrated with a Ganesh sthapan at one of the student’s home. Which Maharashtrian would not like to say “Ganpati Bappa Morya”?

3. Navaratri: Beginning of October

We invite a local band or Garba DJs. Girls dress up in beautiful chaniya cholis with guys matching up with their stunning outfits. People dance through the night to celebrate this wonderful festival. What better way to meet that pretty girl you saw during orientation?

4. Diwali Night: End of October

It’s the big night that everyone waits for through the year. Clearly, the most important of the Indian festivals, Diwali is celebrated in its entire splendor with a huge gathering of students and cultural shows. There’s music, dance, drama, food and celebration. The best time to connect with the Desi community in Amherst.

5. Holi, India Night: End of March

Another big night when we open the doors for the entire UMass community to come and get a taste of the Indian culture. Students display their musical, dancing and acting talents to put up stunning performances. There is a good mix of traditional art forms and Bollywood style Hungama followed by great food. There is no ways that you can feel homesick on Holi if you’re a part of India Night!

6. Farewell Party: Beginning of May

It’s usually a small gathering of graduating students and their friends and roommates. That’s when you remember all the disasters from the previous years and make more memories. That’s when you realize that you may never cross roads with the same people who shared your room. But that’s also when you realize that you’ve made some friends for life, irrespective of whether you ever meet them again or not.

7. Independence Day: August 15

This is the one day, when we take a break from partying and think more seriously about what it means to be an Indian. Typically there are debates or discussions about a relevant issue and a meaningful dialogue about the role that we, as students can play in the wellbeing of our beloved country.
