Overview

Royal Holloway was founded in 1886 and became part of the University of London in 1901. There are around 7,000 undergraduates and postgraduates, with around 1,000 students from 120 different countries. The College has a 135-acre campus with includes academic, residential accommodation, and recreational facilities. Royal Holloway is a truly multidisciplinary university and is one of the University of London’s five centers for science teaching and research. Active international standard research is a feature of all departments: those which received the top rating in the latest government assessment of research included Classics, Drama, Theatre and Media Arts, French, Geography, History, Italian, Music and Psychology.

Location

The University of London is one of Europe’s leading universities and is divided into many different colleges, schools and institutes. Royal Holloway is one of the major colleges of the University, but is located on the outskirts of the capital, close to Windsor and about 12 km from London Heathrow Airport. Students get the “best of both worlds” in being able to live on a beautiful country campus, with a lively Students’ Union, while being just 30 minutes by train from city life in central London.

Eligibility

Students should have a minimum GPA of 3.0, with documented background in the disciplines of study (major/minor). RHC does not allow students to take courses across the curriculum.

Length of Study

UMass gives priority to students who wish to study at RHC for the full academic year. Fall or Spring terms may be available after full-year students are placed. Fall term: late September to mid-December. Spring and Summer terms: mid-January to mid -June.

Curriculum

Royal Holloway offers opportunities for the full academic year (September-June), the Fall Semester (September-December)and the Spring Semester (January-June). Visiting Students can study in up to two different academic disciplines and are taught and assessed alongside all other students. Most departments regard tutorials as the core of the teaching system, but lectures, seminars, workshops, laboratory practicals and fieldwork are also important teaching methods. Precise methods vary between subjects.

A full courseload for the year is 4 course units -- 4 whole unit courses, 8 1/2 unit courses or a mix of the two. See the Course Catalog for more information.

Housing

Exchange students are guaranteed on-campus housing either in the Founder’s Hall (which closes during vacation periods), or in other halls of residence (which remain open). Housing consists of single study bedrooms, which are fully networked and have

ensuite bathroom facilities. The halls designated for Study Abroad students are “self-catering”, which means there are facilities for you to cook your own meals. More information can be found at the RHC Accommodation page.
