Location

Situated in the North West of England, almost equidistant between London and Edinburgh, Manchester lies at the center of an excellent air, road and rail network. The city combines the grandeur of its Victorian architectural and business heritage with the vigor and excitement of an international metropolis which has one of the largest student populations in Europe. Manchester is surrounded by national parks, with Snowdonia to the west, the Peak District to the south, the Lake District to the north and the Yorkshire Dales to the east. Quiet market towns and villages are within easy traveling distance. Manchester is one of the fastest growing cities in the UK and offers tremendous opportunities for nightlife, the arts, and sporting events.

Overview

The Victoria University of Manchester, founded in 1851, was the first of England’s great civic universities and has been regarded as one of the country’s top institutions for both teaching and research. The University of Manchester, formed in 2004 from the merger of the Victoria University with the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) now ranks as the largest single-site higher education institution in the country. The Manchester Business School, formerly part of UMIST, is considered one of the most prestigious business schools in the UK. With around 2,000 students and a teaching staff of 190, the MBS provides an international and progressive environment for academics linking research with service to both business and the public sector.

Eligibility

Students should have a minimum GPA of 3.0, with documented background in the disciplines of study (major/minor).

Length of Study

Semester 1 begins in mid-September and classes end in mid-December. Exams are held in the last two weeks of January, however students attending for Semester 1 only may arrange to have classes assessed in December. Semester 2 begins in late January and ends, including examinations, in early June. There are 4-week breaks in winter and spring.

Curriculum

Students attending in Semester 1 are able to choose from a selection of Semester 1 and Full-Year courses. Students attending Semester 2 only will have a shorter list of classes to choose from, since there is no entry into Full-Year courses at the mid point. Students are only able to take classes offered by Manchester Business School. The full workload for a semester is 60 MBS credits (6 classes), however exchange students may take 5 classes with permission from UMass. There is a wide range of courses in management, finance, and marketing, however UMass students should have had the introductory courses in these areas before applying to MBS.

Housing

The University Accommodation Office will allocate housing to students studying at MBS for a full year, Semester 1 or Semester 2 from Halls featured in the Student Accommodation booklet. Students attending for one semester only will not be able to choose a specific Hall, but can indicate a preference for a self-catered or a catered hall. The first semester contract terminates at the end of January (even for students leaving in December) and the second semester contract terminates mid-June. Not all rooms have Ethernet points, but there will be internet access in onsite computer clusters.
