University of Manchester
LocationSituated in the North West of England, almost equidistant between London and Edinburgh, Manchester lies at the center of an excellent air, road and rail network. The city combines the grandeur of its Victorian architectural and business heritage with the vigor and excitement of an international metropolis which has one of the largest student populations in Europe. Manchester is surrounded by national parks, with Snowdonia to the west, the Peak District to the south, the Lake District to the north and the Yorkshire Dales to the east. Quiet market towns and villages are within easy traveling distance. Manchester is one of the fastest growing cities in the UK and offers tremendous opportunities for nightlife, the arts, and sporting events. OverviewThe Victoria University of Manchester, founded in 1851, was the first of England’s great civic universities and has been regarded as one of the country’s top institutions for both teaching and research. The University of Manchester, formed in 2004 from the merger of the Victoria University with the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) now ranks as the largest single-site higher education institution in the country with over 35,000 students. EligibilityStudents should have a minimum GPA of 3.0, with documented background in the disciplines of study (major/minor). Length of StudySemester 1 begins in mid-September and classes end in mid-December. Exams are held in the last two weeks of January, however students attending for Semester 1 only may arrange to have classes assessed in December. Semester 2 begins in late January and ends, including examinations, in early June. There is a 4-week break in winter and a 3-week break in spring. CurriculumStudents may choose courses from as many subject areas as they wish, with appropriate academic background and prerequisites. 60 credits is a full-time load per semester, and 120 credits for the year. Course choices must be approved by the individual departments at Manchester, and certain subjects may be highly enrolled. To see a list of subjects, check the Catalog. HousingThe University Accommodation Office will allocate housing to students studying at Manchester for a full year, Semester 1 or Semester 2 from Halls featured in the Student Accommodation booklet. Students attending for one semester only will not be able to choose a specific Hall, but can indicate a preference for a self-catered or a catered hall. The first semester contract terminates at the end of January (even for students leaving in December) and the second semester contract terminates mid-June.
