University of Leeds
LocationLeeds is situated centrally in Britain 200 miles north of London, or about 2 hours by train. The city of 850,000 has been transformed from its industrial origins into a commercial center which is unrivalled in the North of England as a shopping destination and center for entertainment and the arts. Haworth, home of the Bronte sisters, is just 20 miles to the west, while the Yorkshire Dales (James Herriott country) is but a short drive away. Numerous travel publications have recently named Leeds as the best place to visit in the UK. OverviewFounded in 1874 as The Yorkshire College, the University is now one of the UK’s major research and teaching institutions occupying a single campus half a mile from the city center. The student population is over 33,000 studying in 700 undergraduate and 330 graduate degree programs. There are approximately 4,000 international students studying at Leeds from countries all around the world. The University has first-class learning and teaching facilities, with an excellent library. A wide range of student support services are available, including disability services and a very active Student Union. EligibilityStudents should have a minimum GPA of 3.0, with documented background in the disciplines of study (major/minor). Length of StudyThe Autumn term begins in mid-September and classes end in mid-December, with exams taking place in January (Autumn term students are expected to sit exams in January). The Spring/Summer terms begin in the third week of January and end in early June. There is a 3-week winter break and a 4-week spring break. CurriculumExchange students at Leeds are fully integrated into the academic and social life of the University. U.S. students may take classes across the curriculum from four different departments, and all classes are modularized. The normal load is 120 Leeds credits per year, or 60 per semester. Most students have their own study bedroom with shared common room, library, bar, music room, laundry and television room, although facilities differ between halls and flats.
