Overview
The University of Fort Hare is one of the oldest and best-known universities in
Africa. As one of the first historically black universities (HBU) established in
1916, the University's history in many ways mirrors that of society. It also has
one of the most comprehensive collections of black South African art and
includes the FS Malan Mueum, originally established as an ethnological study
museum; the AJD Meiring Art Gallery, established as a gallery of contemporary
African art and including a fine collection of traditional African art; and the
De Beers Centenary Art Gallery, established in 1989, which is home to much South
African black art.
The Center for Cultural Studies is the home for the archives of such
organizations as the African National Congress, Unity Movement of South Africa,
Azapo, Black Consciousness Movement, as well as the Pan African Congress. Many
of the leaders of the liberation movements attended Fort Hare, including
internationally know leaders such as Nelson Mandela, the late Oliver Tambo, and
Chris Hani.
The University is situated on a modern campus on the historic site of Fort Hare
on the Tyhume River, in the small town of Alice. Alice is located in the Ciskei,
between King William's Town (60km) and Fort Beaufort (20km). It is 110km from
East London , the closest city and airport.
Curriculum
Fort Hare offers a selection of courses in African studies, English, history,
political science, philosophy, psychology, sociology, education, nursing, plant
sciences, business, agriculture, and theology. It is important to remember that
this university continues to struggle under the system of post-apartheid and is
actively involved in the complex business of ensuring that its students receive
the best of what higher education can provide, in spite of years of inequities.
The enrollment is about 2000 students on campus.
Housing
Housing is provided on campus in one of the residential halls. Meals are served
cafeteria-style.
