Education Abroad & Exchange - The Application

Applications to study abroad are available in the Education Abroad Advising Center. Prior to receiving an application, ALL students must meet with a Program Advisor. Stop by the Advising Center 10AM - 4PM to fill out the "Pre-Application for Study Abroad" and to make an appointment with an Advisor.

Some programs have application forms available on the program webpage (see Program List)

The UMass application includes:

  • Application including the Conditions of Membership, Language Competency (if necessary), and Letters of Recommendation
  • Statement of Purpose: 1 to 2 page statement about why you want to go abroad and your goals
  • List of courses you are currently taking at UMass
  • List of courses you wish to take abroad
  • $25 application fee payable to the University of Massachusetts Amherst
  • Official transcript [PDF] from the Registrar Office
  • 2 or 3 recommendations, 1 must be from a professor
  • Personal Interview (depends on the program)
  • Passport size photos (# depends on the program)
  • Complete applications can be dropped off at 467 Hills South.
Short-Term Programs

Each year, some departments offer options for short-term programs. Some require enrollment in a spring course, with the international student component organized during a vacation period (January, spring break, or end of semester). For more information, you may contact IPO or your academic department.
