IN THE VALLEY

The Pioneer Valley is rich with farmland! This means that fresh fruits and vegetables are very inexpensive and fresh. There are a number of restaurants in the area that use locally grown produce.  These restaurants generally have a number of vegetarian and vegan dishes, as well. Some of the local veggie-friendly locales are The Lone Wolf Café and Fresh Side Café, Bueno Y Sano, the Black Sheep, Judie’s, and Amherst Chinese Food in downtown Amherst.  Butternuts on Route 9 in Hadley, as well as a number of Northampton restaurants and cafes including Paul and Elizabeth’s and the Haymarket offer many vegetarian and vegan options, and use locally grown produce. Supermarkets in the area also advertise locally grown produce, and carry a number of vegetarian and vegan items and ingredients which cater to specialty diets. The Big Y and Stop and Shop have a number of options for all diets, including vegan and vegetarian diets. Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s in Hadley cater to diets of organic and whole foods and nutritionally conscious eaters.

 

ON-CAMPUS

  • All dining commons offer rice milk and soy milk, one or more hot vegan entrées, and some vegetarian options daily at lunch and dinner. Salad bars in each of the dining commons are filled with fresh vegetables, legumes and tofu. One whole grain, such as brown rice, mixed grains, couscous, bulgur or barley, is available on a daily basis in the dining commons. Franklin Dining Commons has a vegan bar.
  • Earthfoods Café is located in the Student Union. The café is run by a group of students concerned with the lack of economical, healthy food on campus. Earthfoods is a not-for-profit student run business at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Earthfoods Café’s mission is to provide ovo-lacto vegetarian food at an inexpensive price to the UMASS community.

 

 

 

  • People’s Market is also located in the Student Union. This unique student-run store operates to provide a place for the University community to buy natural and fresh foods, an alternative eating place, and works to promote the co-operative and collective movements. This student-run business sells vegetarian and vegan foodstuffs as well as a number of other Earth-friendly, health-conscious products. Their aim is to educate and inform the community about nutritional, political, and social issues in the realm of the food industry.
