ISS UMass Research Statement for Stem Students

UMass Research Statement for STEM Students

In May, 2015 UMass Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy has stated the following:

“Each department in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics(STEM) academic fields (as defined by the Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement unit) will require international students to write a research statement (a few sentences) that must be approved and signed by the student's advisor prior to any international travel.”

  • This reseach statement applies to both Undergraduate and Graduate International students that have their immigration status sponsored by UMass Amherst, and must be written by the student.

  • If you are unsure if your academic discipline is considered to be a "STEM" field by Homeland Security please refer to the STEM list.

  • In order to assist with the research statement process, the IPO recommends using the following format whenever possible.  Please paste this letter on your academic department's letterhead.

  • Whenever possible, the letter should be signed in original ink.  If an original (paper) letter with signature is not possible, an electronic version will suffice.

  • Keep this letter with you whenever you travel and/or need to have a new US consular appointment for a visa renewal.

  • IPO will not need to see the letter and does not need a copy.  If your department or graduate advisor wishes to keep a copy that is entirely optional.
