FIRST SEMESTER

 

SEPTEMBER 2012

Tuesday 9/4 Volunteers’ Meeting-9:30 a.m. Glass Room, Bangs Center

Tuesday 9/11 Welcome Meeting – 10 a.m.
Join us at the Amherst Woman’s Club at 35 Triangle Street. Meet new and returning members of our group for introductions, coffee and conversation.
 
Tuesday 9/18 10am Jones Library and Lord Jeffrey Inn
Meet at the Jones Library for a tour and to get your library card. Then, we will walk to the Inn for coffee and a brief tour.
 
Tuesday 9/25 10am Pick you own apples! 10 a.m.
Come to the Cold Springs Orchard in Belchertown which is run by UMASS. Wear old shoes, it can be wet. There is also a small shop where you can buy other fruits, cider and jam.
 

OCTOBER 2012

Tuesday 10/2 Make an Apple Pie 10 a. m.
Now you have apples, we will show you how to make an apple pie
and other apple desserts at the home of Betsy McInnis, 76 Lincoln Ave.
 
Tuesday 10/9 Look Park 10 a.m.
This is a lovely park in Florence, Ma with walking paths, playgrounds, and picnic areas. Visit the park and enjoy the fall weather.
 
Tuesday 10/16 Calligraphy and Chinese Painting 10 am
Meet at the Bangs Center for a demonstration of calligraphy by our own Ching Ching Cernada. Learn how to do it yourself.
 
Tuesday 10/23 Carve a Pumpkin 10 a.m.
Halloween is a popular holiday in the U.S. Come to Nancy Condon’s house in Belchertown to carve pumpkins for Halloween. We will be carving outside so wear warm clothes if necessary.
 
Tuesday 10/23 Pot Luck Supper 6 pm
Meet at the Baptist church for dinner. Your family is invited. Please bring a dish of food to share with the group. It will be fun to meet each other’s families
 
Tuesday 10/30 Maple Line Farm
Visit a family owned dairy farm in North Hadley. See how milk is processed and tour the farm. Wear old shoes it may be muddy!
 

NOVEMBER 2012

Tuesday 11/6 Coffee with Drivers 10 a.m.
Meet at different volunteers homes in small groups. Have a conversation about your customs in your home country.
 
Tuesday 11/13 Thanksgiving Sampler 10 a.m.
Meet at 120 Pulpit Hill (Pioneer Valley Co-Housing Common House) to taste all the traditional dishes served at an American Thanksgiving . The volunteers will cook for you.

Tuesday 11/20 Thanksgiving Week No meeting

Tuesday 11/27 UMASS Police Station 10 a.m.
We will meet at the UMASS Police station and learn about laws in the U.S. We may even get a tour of the station and jail cell.
 

DECEMBER 2012

Tuesday 12/4 Eric Carle Museum 10 a.m.
Visit the museum and learn about Eric Carle a famous childrens’ book illustrator. See other art as well.
 
Tuesday 12/11 Holiday Wreath making 10 a.m.
We will bring the supplies, you bring your creativity to make a wreath for the holiday season. Meet at the Bangs Center.
 
Tuesday 12/18 and 12/25

View the sky from the Amherst College Planetarium. Learn about star After we will walk to the Natural History Museum to see the dinosaurs!
 
Tuesday 2/12 Valentine Crafts 10 am
Meet at the Bangs Center to make valentine creations to bring home to the one you love!
 
Tuesday 2/19 School Vacation
 
Tuesday 2/26 International Cooking 10am
Meet at Betsy McInnis’s house on 76 Lincoln Ave. to prepare and eat a lunch together. One country’s food will be featured.
 

MARCH  2013

Tuesday 3/5 Yankee Auction 10 a.m.
Have fun playing an old New England game. You will need to bring a small wrapped gift. Meeting will be at the Baptist Church.
 
Tuesday 3/12 Mount Holyoke College Bulb Show 10 a.m.
Visit the greenhouse at the college and think spring. Go next door and see the wonderful art work at the museum.

No Meeting — UMass Spring Break
 
Tuesday 3/26 Maple Sugaring 10 a.m.
Learn about traditional maple syrup production at the
Williams Sugar house in Deerfield, Ma. Have a pancake breakfast.

APRIL 2013

Meet at different volunteers’ homes. Bring some photos from home, your wedding, your family to share with everyone.
 
Tuesday 4/9 International Cooking 10 a.m.
Come to Betsy McInnis’s house to prepare an International lunch.
 
Tuesday 4/23 Sojourner Truth 10 a.m.
Learn about Sojourner Truth, a former slave. Visit her statue in Florence, Ma and get a guided tour of her neighborhood.
 
Tuesday 4/16 NO MEETING — Public School Vacation
 
Tuesday 4/30 SPRING TRIP !!! Visit Old Sturbridge Village
Spend the day at a traditional eighteenth century New England Village. Experience early New England life from 1790-1840. One of the country’s largest living history museums. www.osv.org
 
We will go by bus from 9am-3pm.
 

MAY 2013

Come see the farm animals on the UMASS campus. Learn about the Veterinary and Animal Sciences Department and what research they are doing.
 
Tuesday 5/154 Spring Picnic and Final Meeting 11a.m.-1p.m.
Enjoy a pot-luck picnic lunch to celebrate a great year! Bring a dish to share. We will be outdoors.
