URGENT! New OPT "29 Month" Rule [PDF]On April 8, 2008, DHS published an interim final rule that changes several key aspects of F-1 optional practical training (OPT). This is an interim final rule with request for public comment. The rule is effective April 8, 2008. Written comments must be submitted to DHS on or before June 9, 2008. Summer Graduates: Apply now for OPTAll F-1 students must apply for Post-completion OPT PRIOR to your program completion date. Program completion is defined as the day that you complete all requirements for your degree. It takes 2 to 3 months to process the application. Immigration Reform and Attracting Foreign TalentA NAFSA: Association of International Educators Statement Check the expiration date and major/level on your I-20 or DS-2019All continuing students should check their documents for expected completion dates and apply for an extension before the expiration of your I-20/DS-2019. You should also look at your I-20 to verify that your correct major and level appear on the I-20. If the information on your I-20 has changed, you'll need to request a new I-20 from an International Student Advisor Travel Outside of the U.S.Be sure that the F-1/J-1 visa stamp in your passport is valid and that you have an up-to-date (six months) signature on your I-20/DS-2019 form, either from the International Student Advisor or, in the case of sponsored students, from your visa sponsor (such as IIE or LASPAU) |
