Canada is a nation of remarkable
geographic contrasts and cultural diversity that remains largely unfamiliar
to most citizens of the United States, despite the fact that 80% of all
Canadians live within 100 miles of the US border.
Programs in both English and French, illustrate two approaches to foreign
study in Canada. French majors should consider francophone programs in
Quebec for immersion in a French-speaking culture. Students from any number
of majors can enjoy the freshness and diversity of either French- or
English-speaking Canada.
UMass Amherst sponsors a number of academic exchanges with universities in
Canada. The Carleton University exchange grew out of direct contacts with
UMA which have been sustained for many years. In 1982 UMA became a member of
the New England Quebec Student Exchange Program, which opened the door for
students to study at any of the universities in the province of Quebec.
