Overview

Sydney is Australia's largest city with a population of 4 million people. Located on the East Coast, this thriving harborside metropolis is renowned for its great natural beauty and famous architecture. Sydney's major attractions include Sydney Opera House, one of the world's most recognizable buildings constructed between 1959 and 1973 and designed by Danish architect Joern Utzon. Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of the city's most distinctive and imposing structures and Sydney Tower 3050m tall and offering panoramic views of the city. Shopping opportunities abound from exclusive boutiques in Double Bay, antique sores in Paddington to lively week-end markets in The Rocks and Balmain. The city's extensive transport communication network of ferries trains and buses can quickly connect you to Taronga Zoo, Sydney Harbour Island National Park, or the World Heritage listed Blue Mountains. As the nations cultural and commercial hub Sydney offers a wealth of opportunity in a wide variety of fields, including sports, conservation, the arts and business disciplines.

The Sydney Internship Program is hosted by CAPA (Centers for Academic Programmes Abroad) www.capa.org. CAPA provides full support for the program, including housing, classes, internships, orientations, field trips, and general information.

Curriculum

The Sydney Internship Program is designed to place students in 6-9 credit (20-25 hours/week) internships with various companies and organizations, and to offer a range of complementary coursework.

Internship placements are individually arranged by the Sydney Internship Coordinator. The academic context for the internship credit consists of a course, The World of Work, which meets two hours/week. In the course, students will have the opportunity to discuss various aspects of working in Sydney and learn about other facets of Australian culture. Students will be expected to keep a comprehensive journal and to prepare a final integrative paper on the internship experience. Grades will be assigned by the faculty coordinator.

The Internship Director will provide an orientation on working in Sydney as well as support services on a continual basis throughout the term. Placements are available in a wide range of sites, including businesses, corporations, art galleries and museums, government agencies, publishing companies, radio stations, non-profit organizations, and many more. Specific placements depend on the background, training, interests and abilities of students, as well as their success in securing the internship in the final interview held during the first few days in Sydney. Internships are not paid.

Students may choose to take one, two or three 3-credit courses in addition to the internship course for a total of 12-15 credits. Courses are taught to the US students by Australian faculty and visiting US faculty.

Housing

Students are housed with other US student participants in shared flats with bedrooms and kitchen and bath facilities. Most bedrooms are double or triple occupancy.

Coursework

Students may choose to take one, two or three 3-credit courses in addition to the internship course for a total of 12-15 credits.*
