About the Competition

Intent to Compete (Fall Semester)

For teams that will be competing in the Executive Summary & Elevator Pitch Competition, teams will draft a short initial proposal, which will be used to confirm eligibility of the team members, advisor(s), and technology. The proposal contents will be confidential to faculty and staff administering the competition.  Please click here for the Intent to Compete Form.  Please note that if you submit an Intent to Compete Form in the fall semester, you will not need to resubmit in the spring semester. By submitting the intent to compete form in the fall, you are confirming your eligibility for the Executive Summary & Elevator Pitch Competition and the Mini-Plan Competition & Final Competition.

Executive Summary & Elevator Pitch Competition

Each team will submit to the judges a two or three page executive summary of the business plan and concept. This summary will follow a standard format and will address the company’s background, what the business seeks to accomplish, the technology and strategy that will be used to launch the business, the company’s competitive advantage, and what need/niche the product fills in the market. Each team will have an opportunity for team leader to present a two-minute elevator pitch to the judges. An award of $5,000 will be presented to the Best Executive Summary & Elevator Pitch. In-kind prizes of donated professional consultation will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams.

Mini-Plan Competition

All teams will provide an executive summary as well as a mini-plan to the panel of judges. The mini-plan, not to exceed 5 pages, will provide a more detailed description of the actual product or service, how it will be designed or developed, its anticipated market, distribution, and promotion, as well as its market price and expected financial performance. The faculty member participating will attest to the technical feasibility of the proposed innovation.

A panel of 3-4 judges with appropriate expertise will screen the mini-plans. Up to 5 teams will be selected to move forward in the competition.

Final Competition & Banquet

ONLY the teams selected from the mini-plan are eligible to compete in the final competition.

At the event, each team will give an oral presentation to the judges and audience members. A keynote speaker will address the crowd while the panel of judges convenes behind closed doors to determine a competition winner. The judging panel will announce the prize at the end of the banquet. A single prize for the final competition of $45,000 is proposed. It is expected that the prize will be used to advance the business plan towards commercialization. $20,000 will be awarded immediately, and a maximum of $25,000 additional awards will be made as decided by the judges, contingent on milestones proposed in the business plan. A single team can be awarded a maximum of $50,000 with a successful executive summary and elevator pitch in the fall, plus a first place award in the final competition and endorsement of the judges and accomplishment of all milestones.
