2013/14 Request for Applications

 

Application Deadline:  Monday, October 28th @ 12:00 Noon

Open Information Session:  Thursday, October 10th 5:00 – 6:00 PM in Campus Center Room 163(c)

 

Purpose: 

This gift was established by Eugene M. Isenberg (’50, CEO of Nabors Industries, Inc. - retired) and Ronnie Isenberg to aid UMass Amherst graduate students who demonstrate academic merit and a commitment to the integration of science or engineering with management. These awards are intended to prepare recipients for leadership roles in high-tech ventures; corporate research and development; technically oriented businesses; and other entrepreneurial initiatives.

 

Eligibility:

Applicants must be full time UMass Amherst graduate students who are from the:

• College of Engineering

• College of Natural Sciences

• Isenberg School of Management

• or other school/college provided the focus of their project has a physical, chemical, or biological science or engineering foundation

 

Successful applicants must demonstrate:

• Completion of at least one semester of graduate study at UMass Amherst with a GPA of 3.2 or better

• Interest in the integration of business fundamentals with science and/or engineering through research/project work

• Intent to build on past accomplishments and explore the commercial potential of research/project

• Strong support of a graduate advisor; documented in a written recommendation

 

Award:  

• Varying number of awards up to $10,000 each per year, to be applied starting in 2014 spring semester

• Awards may be renewed for a second year based on assessment of the projects potential to compete in programs such as, but not limited to: UMass Innovation Challenge; Mass Challenge; CleanTech Open; NSF Innovation Corps (I-Corps)

• Initial awards recognize specific current/past accomplishments.  Renewable second year awards will be predicated on plans and deliverables such as: business plans; research submitted for publishing; patent applications

• Scholars are expected to attend monthly lunches to provide oral updates of activities during the award period

• Preference will be given to research or project work focused on teamwork and collaboration among disciplines

 

Application Package includes the following:   

• Cover sheet with applicant’s signature (download below)

• Résumé or curriculum vitae

• A letter of recommendation from graduate advisor

• A typed essay, around 750 words, outlining relevant and specific research/project work accomplishments, and articulating a set of goals for the future that can be accomplished in the spring of 2014 and could prepare the applicant for a potential second year award
