Welcome to Issue 3!
Industry partnerships are very important to the
campus. The relationships take work to cultivate but
benefit the students, the campus, the region, and the
state. Several initiatives are underway to raise the
visibility of our campus with industry and the public
sector. This issue of "Industry ACCESS" features a
few of them.
If this is the first time you're receiving the newsletter,
welcome! Our list continues to grow with each
subsequent release.
We encourage you to forward this email to other people
on and off campus who share an interest in UMass
Amherst industry interaction.

| Statewide Science & Technology Leadership Council launch includes UMass | | | UMass will participate in a statewide Science &
Technology Leadership Council convened by Mass
Insight, a public/private advocacy organization. The
goal of this group of academic and industrial leaders is
to help shape a Science & Technology strategy for the
Commonwealth. President Bulger will speak at the kick-
off event for the Council on May 23 where Mass
Insight's report on State Support for Critical Academic
R&D Strengths in Massachusetts as compared to other
leading technology states in the US will be released.
Amherst campus leaders were consulted by Mass
Insight during a campus visit in April.

| Industry/University Partnerships Key Component of ERC Proposal | | | Improved forecasting of extreme weather events is the
theme for the pre-proposal for an Engineering Research
Center (ERC) submitted to the NSF by the Electrical
and Computer Engineering and Computer Science
departments on May 15. If awarded, funding for the
ERC, for up to ten years, will be used for research to
engineer a new system for detecting and predicting
extreme and high impact weather events based on a
new paradigm of densely-spaced adaptive networks of
remote sensors for high resolution atmospheric
sensing. Five companies, including Raytheon, Vaisala,
M/A-Com, Weather Svcs Int'l, and IBM have provided
letters of support for the effort. At least ten others
have indicated interest in becoming members. These
partnerships are a requirement for the ERC, and they
add resources to the proposal.

| CUMIRP Spring Meeting Targeted for Industry Partners | | | The oldest NSF established Industry/University
Cooperative Research Center (NSF-I/UCRC), the Center
for UMass/Industry Research on Polymers (CUMIRP) has
evolved over 20 years into a dynamic example of
enhancing research through industry/university
partnerships. CUMIRP hosts it's annual Spring Meeting
on May 14-15. Sessions are open to the public on
select CUMIRP research clusters and polymer
biomaterials. These complement private sessions for
members only. Prospective members are welcome.

development consortium consisting of 22 companies
from around the country (e.g. Gorton, OceanSpray and
Welch's from Massachusetts, and Hershey, Frito-Lay,
Nestle, et al. from around the US and world), to
discuss common concerns and new technologies in
areas such as food safety, processing, and
environmental issues.
