Mass Spectrometry and Biophysical Characterization-Core Summer Internship

UMass Amherst operates more than 30 Core Facilities offering a wide range of services to support basic, translational, and clinical research, including access to cutting-edge technologies, high-end instrumentation, and technical expertise. The CSI Program aims to provide hands-on experiential research & technical training with these facilities to UMass undergraduate students from Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

The Mass Spectrometry Core Facility is seeking summer interns to assist with the following:

  • Assist with day-to-day operations
  • Coordinate scheduling of instruments
  • Perform routine maintenance/lab housekeeping activities
  • Assist with routine sample analysis
  • Assist with conducting research projects

Qualifications:

Some lab experience is required. Enthusiasm for understanding mass spectrometry as an analytical technique is a must.

Do you have:

  • Previous Lab Experience
  • Previous Work experience
  • Microsoft Office skills, database programming
  • Linux or programming skill
  • Hammock-making skills

All mandatory lab safety trainings must be completed before the start of the internship. You can register for trainings via EH&S’s website: https://ehs.umass.edu/trainings.

Please indicate which of the required lab safety trainings for Mass Spectrometry and Biophysical Characterization Core Facilities you have completed: (Already completed lab safety trainings are a plus, but not required for consideration. You will be able to complete any trainings that you do not already have prior to the start of your internship.)

  • General lab safety
  • Fire safety

Specialized, on-the-job training will be provided by Mass Spectrometry and Biophysical Characterization Core Facilities staff.

Interns will also work under the supervision of Dr. Stephen Eyles and Cedric Bobst.

Workload:  ~30 hours/week – starting end of spring semester, 300 hours total in the lab. Weekly schedules may be flexible, and will be coordinated with your supervising Core Facility Director.

Compensation:  $17/hour
