The loss of a University coworker, coworker’s dependent/loved one and preparing for our own death are challenging topics. Many resources are available to assist you through this time.

Employee – estate planning

In addition to financial planners available in the community and through the UMass Five College Credit Union, the University’s 403(b) vendors and Commonwealth’s 457/SMART Plan Vendors provide retirement planning advice. Participants of the MetLegal plan (Open enrollment for this plan occurs each May for coverage the following July 1 – June 30)

Retirement: When engaging in estate planning please consider the following in addition to your other assets and insurance benefits:

  • MA State Employees Retirement System benefits (MSERS/pension system/defined benefit plan) SERS Option D form  and When Option D comes before Option C. Contact the MA State Board of Retirement to confirm your SERS beneficiary(ies).
  • MA Group Insurance Commission basic and optional life insurance coverages and beneficiaries. Contact the GIC to confirm your GIC life insurance beneficiary(ies)
  • Contact the University 403(b) and/or Commonwealth 457/SMART vendor(s), if applicable, to confirm your account balance and beneficiary(ies).
  • MetLegal (link) provides estate planning services as well as coverage for writing a will/trust (Open enrollment for this plan occurs each May for coverage the following July 1 – June 30.)

Death of a UMass Employee’s Dependent

In addition to being a difficult and unwelcome time, the loss of a dependent can impact many of your benefits including, but not limited to the need for you to:

  • Remove your family member from your GIC insurance (Insurance Data Form (IDF) with a death certificate and Insurance Enrollment and Change Form (Form 1) if transitioning from a family to an individual health insurance plan
  • Enroll/change your Health Care Spending Account and/or Dependent Care Assistance Program election
  • Update/change your beneficiaries
    • MA State Employees Retirement System benefits (MSERS/pension system/defined benefit plan) SERS Option D form and When Option D comes before Option C . Contact the MA State Board of Retirement to confirm your SERS beneficiary(ies).
    • MA Group Insurance Commission basic and optional life insurance coverages and beneficiaries. Contact the GIC to confirm your GIC life insurance beneficiary(ies)
    • Contact the University 403(b) and/or Commonwealth 457/SMART vendor(s), if applicable, to confirm your account balance and beneficiary(ies).
    • MetLegal (link) provides estate planning services as well as coverage for writing a will/trust (Open enrollment for this plan occurs each May for coverage the following July 1 – June 30.)
  • You may wish to change your Massachusetts and/or Federal income tax withholding/exemptions. Please contact a tax specialist or financial advisor if you require tax advice.

If your spouse has died you may enroll for up to four times your annual salary in GIC Optional Life Insurance (if you do not already carry this amount of coverage or more) without passing a medical evidence of insurability exam. To do this you must complete a GIC Insurance Enrollment and Change Form (Form 1)  to the HRESC within 31 days of your spouse’s death with a copy of your spouse’s death certificate.
