Instructions for All Benefited Employees

Work Life Event:
Applies To:
All Benefited Employees

You may provide health insurnace coverage for your dependent child through the Massachusetts Group Insurance Commission (GIC) through the end of the month in which he or she turns 26 years of age, however you are responsible for notifying the GIC of your child's student status when he or she turns 19 years of age and if/when he or she is over 19 years of age and no longer a full-time student (see below).

Benefitted employees should work with their dental plan administrator to extend dental insurance coverage for a dependent over the age of 19.

When your dependent turns 19 years of age

When your child turns age 19 you may extend your child's GIC coverage by completing and returning the GIC Dependent Ages 19 to 26 Enrollment Application to the GIC.

If your child is an eligible full-time student you may extend the child's coverage under any GIC health plan you have selected.

If your child is not an eligible full-time student and lives outside of your plan's network area (reference the GIC Active State Employee Benefits Decision Guide for network areas) you may only continue providing GIC health insurance coverage by changing your health plan to a plan that covers your child's place of residence. Your child turning 19 years of age is a qualifying event, allowing you to change health insurance plans if, he or she lives outside of your plan's network area.

When your dependent is over 19 years of age and no longer a full-time student

When your child is no longer a full-time student you may extend your child's GIC coverage by completing and returning the GIC Dependent Ages 19 to 26 Enrollment Application to the GIC as long as he or she is under 26 years of age. You are responsible for notifying the GIC when your child is no longer a full-time student by completing and returning this form.

If your child is not an eligible full-time student and lives outside of your plan's network area (reference the GIC Active State Employee Benefits Decision Guide for network areas) you may only continue providing GIC health insurance coverage by changing your health plan to a plan that covers your child's place of residence. Your child no longer being a full-time student is a qualifying event, allowing you to change health insurance plans, if he or she lives outside of your plan's network area.

When your dependent turns 26 years of age

You may provide health insurnace coverage for your dependent child through the Massachusetts Group Insurance Commission (GIC) through the end of the month in which he or she turns 26 years of age. Thereafter you may provide the same insurance coverage to your child for up to 18 months under COBRA by paying 102% of the premium for that coverage directly to the GIC. Alternately if your child is a resident of Massachusetts, he or she may wish to explore coverage through the Commonwealth Connector, his or her employer or the health care exchange in his or her state of residence.
