Located in scenic western Massachusetts, the Department of Music and Dance at the University of Massachusetts Amherst offers students the advantages of a close-knit community along with the programs and opportunities provided by being at the state’s flagship public university. We have students and faculty from across the country and from around the world who have come together to collaborate and grow as musicians and scholars.

I hope the information provided here will give you a glimpse into what we do. Please be in touch if you need any further information or wish to schedule a visit. We’d love to have you come for a concert or day of classes.

Sunday, April 6th - Infinity Brass, "Dave's Faves" - Featuring favorite works of retiring professor David Sporny. Verne Reynolds: Suite for Brass Quintet, Paquito D'Rivera: Pieces for Brass Quintet, plus Baroque instrumental works by Samuel Scheidt. Bezanson Recital Hall, 8 pm.

Tuesday, April 8th - Tuesdays in Bezanson, "Serenade Heaven" - Music for winds, strings and horns; program to include Dvorák's Serenade in D minor, Op. 44, Beethoven's Serenade in D Major, Op. 25, and Dohnanyi's Serenade in C Major, Op. 10. Bezanson Recital Hall, 8 pm.

Tuesday, April 15th -Graduate Brass Quintet - Andrew Stetson, Hanna Pajalahti, trumpet, Martha Pullen, horn, Brian Dorgan, trombone, Cassi Stewart, tuba. Works to include Mendelssohn String Quartet No. 1, Op. 12, Trans. Reynolds, Linkola Suite for Brass Quintet, Berstein West Side Story Suite, arr. Gale. Frist Baptist Church, Amherst, 7:30 pm. Free.

Saturday, April 19th - Master's Recital - Martha Pullen, horn. Program to include Strauss's Concerto No. 1, Bernhard Heiden's Sonata for Horn and Piano, Sigurd Berge's Horn-Lokk, and Bach's Contrapunctus XIV, (arranged for brass quintet by Jon Nelson). Bezanson Recital Hall, 4 pm.

Friday, April 25th - Junior Recital - Melinda Swanson, horn, with Kristin Seavey, euphonium. Works to include Mozart Concerto No. 2, "Spain" from Buyanovsky's Four Improvisations, and Sonata for Trumpet, Horn and Trombone by Poulenc. Bezanson Recital Hall, 7:30 pm.

Sunday, May 4th -University Horn Choir and UMass Eu-ba Group- Works to include Grieg, Tanner, Wilder, Kern, Humperdinck, Weber. Bezanson Recital Hall, 5 pm. Free.

Monday, May 12th -Graduate Woodwind Quintet - Bonnie Stults, flute, Ian Jessen, oboe, Heather Teed, clarinet, Jeanne MacDonald, horn, Michelle Huddy, bassoon. Works to include Berio Opus Number Zoo, Hindemith,Kammermusik, Op. 24, No. 2,and the world premiere of Yung Shen's, Three Movements for Wind Quintet. First Congregational Church, Amherst, 8 pm. Free.
