Master of Science in Design in Historic Preservation
A Joint Program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst & Hancock Shaker Village
A collaboration between Public History and the UMass Architecture+Design Program, the Master of Science in Design and Historic Preservation offers the unique opportunity for advanced study in historic preservation theory, practice, and public policy at a major public research university and a National Historic Landmark in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
The program uses Hancock Shaker Village, one of the largest and best preserved Shaker sites in the nation, as a primary study site. The Shaker’s deep-seated commitment to sustainability in building, living and farming is the philosophical ground for the program’s curriculum. Students learn and expand their skills in architectural design, historic preservation, construction, restoration, town planning, as well as their understanding of historic site management while working closely with leading preservationists in the state and region.
The program is geared toward working professionals and others who wish to maintain employment while pursuing an advanced degree, or individual courses. Courses are offered on a schedule that allows students to commute to Amherst and Pittsfield for concentrated classes on alternating Fridays and Saturdays in the fall and spring semesters.
Individual classes are open to all. Evidence of design background, historic preservation policy knowledge, and/or expertise in the building trades is required for admission into the Masters program.
Credits may be transferable to alternate advanced degree programs, as well as AIA Mandatory Continuing Education.
