Research Interests and Professional Activities
Elizabeth (Libby) Sharrow’s research focuses on the contemporary public policy history of Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972. She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Minnesota, with a graduate minor in Feminist and Critical Sexuality Studies. Her research focuses on the contemporary political history of Title IX and means through which battles over policy design and implementation altered women’s access to sports “on the basis of sex.” The work analyzes the political construction and mobilization of the “female athlete” (Title IX’s primary political constituent) and the politics of gender, race, class and sexuality inherent to Title IX’s policy domain. Her work has been funded by the Social Science Research Council, the American Association of University Women, the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the University of Minnesota Graduate School, and the Myra Sadker Foundation. She is jointly appointed in the Department of Political Science.
