2016-2017 Peer Mentors
Hi all! I’m Fran Fleming, a junior History major here at UMass in the CHC. In addition to my History major, I’m also minoring in Classics and pursuing a certificate in Professional and Technical Writing. Although I enjoy learning about almost any historical subject, my primary area of historical focus is Public History. I also enjoy ancient history and early American History. I’m particularly interested in the intersection of history and social justice issues, and in how Public History (and history in general) can be harnessed as an agent for social justice education. On campus, I also work as an RA and as a tutor at Athletic Services, and after graduation I hope to work in a museum or library. When I’m not too busy with schoolwork or work-work, I spend my time reading, hanging out with friends, hiking and biking, playing Tetris, and drinking tea. I love meeting new people, especially history majors, so come by anytime with your questions about history, the department, or just to chat!
I am a junior here at UMass Amherst! I am a member of the CHC and I am majoring in History, while pursuing minors in Psychology and Education as well. My historical interests lay both colonial and modern American history. I also enjoy working with children and during the summer of 2016 I interned at an Early Intervention program. Traveling is another passion of mine, and during the summer of 2015 I studied abroad at Trinity College at Oxford University with the UMass Oxford Summer Seminar Program and had one of the best experiences of my life! I also hope to study abroad again in 2017. To me, history and travel are interconnected, and travelling to other places and exploring different cultures enriches our understanding of the history we learn in the classroom. As your Peer Mentor I am excited to meet many of you, and help anyone that may have questions about the History major/minor, study abroad, or anything else that might arise!
I am a junior at UMass Amherst majoring in History and Legal Studies, hoping to either teach or become a lawyer. My area of interest within history is mainly American History, while within legal studies I am interested in criminal law. On campus, I am involved with organizations such as the UMass Democrats, UMass Pre-Law Society, and UMass Conference Services. Also, I am a transfer student from the University of Connecticut. In my spare time, I love sports, outdoor activities, traveling, going out to eat, and hanging with friends. I hope you can find the time to stop by! I am always here to help with anything in your academic life as well as anything else you may want to talk about!
I am a Junior at UMass Amherst, majoring in History and getting a minor in the Chinese Language. My interest in History include a broad History of Asia and a focus in Ancient and Modern China. I am working with the International Programs Office (IPO) this year to try and get to China in the summer of 2017 to work on my Mandarin. My involvements on campus include being the President of the UMass Parkour Club, being in RA at Dickinson in Orchard Hill, and being a member of Phi Alpha Theta (the History Honors Society). I am very excited to assist any student with the History major/minor and any questions that may arise.
