TRAVEL GRANT FOR LATIN AMERICA, SPAIN OR PORTUGAL
INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS
The Department of History and the Latin American Studies Program announce the twenty- fifth annual travel grants of $3,000 to be awarded on a competitive basis to University of Massachusetts students, graduate or undergraduate, who plan to engage in research or pursue a course of study at an established university in Spain, Portugal, or any Latin American country.
1. To be eligible the applicant must be a student in good standing at the Amherst campus of the University and enrolled as a graduate student in history or as an undergraduate in the Certificate Program in Latin American, Caribbean and Latino Studies. He or she must also have a working knowledge of the appropriate language as defined by the Certificate Program regulations.
2. Students interested in being considered must submit the following:
a. A typed statement of no more than four pages describing the project to be undertaken. This may be a field research project involving the use of archives and/or libraries; or it may consist of attending a course of study at an established institution of higher learning. In either case the student will be expected to spend a minimum of six weeks in the country or countries to be visited. Proposals that involve simply the study of Spanish or Portuguese will not be considered.
b. Two letters of recommendation from faculty members.
c. A transcript showing courses taken and grades received through the immediately preceding semester.
d. Evidence of a working knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese. This may be demonstrated by presenting a letter from a member of the Spanish & Portuguese Department or by the transcript showing completion of the necessary coursework as defined by the Certificate Program in Latin American Studies.
