Approved fields for the M.A. general examination

These fields have been approved by the Graduate Studies Committee. Each field reading list generally comprises a core of 10-15 books chosen by the faculty to give a broad overview of the field, and an additional 10-15 books chosen by the examiner and examinee, based on a student's specific interests and concentration. The student's final reading list is usually about 25-30 books. See the Program Handbook for details.

When available, the field name is linked to the current core list of books. For some fields, the faculty have agreed on a core; for others, each faculty member's suggestions are indicated.

Additional fields can be proposed to the Graduate Studies Committee, bearing in mind that the purpose of M.A. fields is to ensure that the examinee has a broad base of historical and historiographical knowledge; the M.A. field is not intended to further narrow specialization.
