Research Interests and Professional Activities:
Stephen Platt specializes in the intellectual and political history of China from the late Ming to the present, with particular interests in regionalism, foreign contact, and the origins of Chinese nationalism. His PhD dissertation was awarded the Field Prize, Yale University's top prize for original writing in the humanities, and his first published article, "The Mandarin of Cambridge" won the Smart Family Foundation Prize for nonfiction writing. Support for his research has come from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Fulbright, and the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation. His first book, Provincial Patriots:
The Hunanese and Modern China
, was published in October 2007 by Harvard University Press.
