Research Interests and Professional Activities
Professor Nightingale is the author of On the Edge: A History of Poor Black Children and their American Dreams (1993) as well as several journal articles. He teaches courses in numerous topics pertaining to recent American history and in World History since 1400. These include general surveys, as well as seminars on global and national political economy, race in the U.S. and in international perspective, and urban community activism. He has a particular interest in the history of U.S. urban poverty and racial segregation, and is working on a book called the "The Ghetto in the Global Village: A World History of the Urban Color Line." He has been active in efforts to internationalize the study of American history.
