Synopsis:

This reading course concentrates on situating the Middle East in 19th century global history. Themes include imperialism, state formation, the use and impact of steam-powered production and communications, and developing ideas of citizenship and nationality. Graded assignments include several short papers and classroom presentations and one long review essay.
