History 693L: Intro to Law and Society

Synopsis:

The course offers an overview of some departments of American law: torts, contracts, labor law, constitutional law. The course also offers an overview of some foreign legal systems. Finally, the course will assist students in using legal materials as part of their historical research. Topics will include: how responsibility is defined in legal terms and how this legal sense of responsibility has changed; how contract law reflects American business values; how labor law in the U.S. differs from European labor law; how constitutional rights of privacy, including gay rights, have been adjudicated in the 20th century. There will be room for students to define their own research projects.
