History 691N: Native American History: New Directions

Synopsis:

The field of Native American / American Indian history has expanded rapidly since the 1990s. This course will focus on reading works that have changed, expanded or energized the field by asking new questions, challenging old assumptions, redefining boundaries, and drawing on interdisciplinary methods. Topics will range from the early contact period to the present. We will read works that emphasize written documents as well as studies grounded in oral tradition and indigenous perspectives. Coursework includes a heavy load of weekly reading, two 7-8 page papers, a final paper, and class presentations. Assignment for the first day of class: Read Devon Mihesuah, ed., Natives and Academics: Researching and Writing About American Indians (1998).
