History 697V: Culture of the Cold War

Synopsis:
This course explores United States history from 1945 to 1990, focusing primarily on the domestic impact of the Cold War. Topics include the development of a national security state, the nuclear arms race, McCarthyism, the civil rights and women's movements, the Vietnam War, and the rise of the New Right. Among the assigned books are Michael Sherry's In the Shadow of War, Paul Boyer's In the Bomb's Early Light, Mary Dudziak's Cold War Civil Rights, Tom Engelhardt's The End of Victory Culture, and H. Bruce Franklin's M.I.A.: Mythmaking in America.
