American History

Synopsis:
United States history survey in which particular attention will be given to conflicting interpretations of the nation's history from Puritan times to the late twentieth century. Topics to be analyzed will be equally divided among three broad periods: Colonial America, Nineteenth-Century U.S., and Twentieth-Century U.S. One, two, or even three different themes or incidents will be studied each week. A very brief analytical paper or an oral report will be due nearly every week. At the end of each third of the course a somewhat longer paper will be due in which students will examine more general patterns of historical interpretation: the various "schools," interpretative strategies, and developing viewpoints that appear in the works read for that part of the course.
