History 691P: Introduction to History

Chris Appy and Brian Ogilvie

Fall 2007, Mon. 3:35 - 6:05 pm

Synopsis:

This course is required for all incoming graduate students starting in September, 2004. It seeks to introduce students to the varieties of history and to make them aware of the work of faculty in our graduate program. Students will investigate theoretical models and intellectual traditions, which will be presented in terms of a series of debates between competing visions and interpretive perspectives. A preliminary reading list will be sent to all incoming students over the summer.

Students will write several papers on scholars, theoretical models, historiographical conventions, and so on. The papers will be submitted in advance of the seminar for which they were prepared and read by all students in advance of the class. These papers and common readings will form the basis for discussion.
