History 658: American Social History

Synopsis:
This course examines forms of U.S. capitalism and corresponding forms of labor relations and state policy from the late nineteenth century to the present. It will look into the composition of the workforce and relations between different sectors of labor, the changing nature of work and the impact of technology and the reorganization of labor in different periods. Race and gender will feature prominently in the analysis, as will the development and demise of trade unionism. The course will end with a review of the literature of globalism. Each student will be responsible for class discussion and for three papers based on major secondary sources in the field.
