History 697T/797T:
Landscape and Memory
Spring 2006 , Thursday 9:30 - 12:00 pm
Synopsis:
This seminar explores the relationship between historical consciousness and environmental perception, or "sense of history" and "sense of place." Besides reading theoretical works on this topic drawn from a variety of disciplines, students registering for this as 797T will be expected to write an original research paper exploring some aspect of this phenomenon in a particular place and time. Students registering for this as 697T will complete three review essays of secondary works in lieu of a research paper. Because of the short time available to research and write the research paper, students wanting to take this as 797T must meet with the instructor during the fall semester and hand in a prospectus with bibliography by the fourth week of class. All students are encouraged to contact the professor in advance for further information and to receive an advance copy of the course syllabus when it is ready.
