Daniel Horowitz
Smith College

Spring 2006, Wednesday 7:00 - 9:30 pm

Synopsis:

The study of the history of consumer culture began in earnest in the early 1980s. Since then it has developed into an exciting and wide ranging area of scholarship, connected as it is to the fields such as history of business, women, labor, African Americans, and politics. In this seminar, we will read many of the path breaking books published in the last 20 years. Students can expect attention to the exciting work in this field, to the variety of strategies available for teaching and scholarship, and to the issues that emerge from examinations of the connections between consumer culture and other arenas.
