History 692C:
Native American History: Theory and Method
Spring 2006 , Wednesday 9:30 - 12:00 pm
Synopsis:
Think you don’t know much about Native Americans and their history? Well, you’re wrong – and you’re right. One difficulty in teaching (and learning about) indigenous peoples' history is that most of us have misguided ideas and unexamined assumptions about Indians in our heads. This course addresses historical and theoretical biases that continue to shape the writing of Native American history. Topics to be discussed include Native American perceptions of their own histories (who owns history?), colonization and primary sources, manifestations of manifest destiny, and the challenge of writing countercolonial histories. Course requirements include two short papers based on assigned readings and a longer historiographic essay. Assignment for the first day of class: read Mihesuah, ed., Natives and Academics.
