History 691P:
Introduction to History
Fall 2005,
Tues. 6:30 - 9:00 pm
Synopsis:
This new course is required for all incoming graduate students starting in September, 2004. It seeks to introduce students to the varieties of history and to make them aware of the work of faculty in our graduate program. Students will investigate theoretical models and intellectual traditions, which will be presented in terms of a series of debates between competing visions and interpretive perspectives. Guest speakers from within the graduate program will be an ongoing part of the course.
Students will write several papers on scholars, theoretical models, historiographical conventions, and so on. The papers will be submitted in advance of the seminar for which they were prepared and read by all students in advance of the class, forming the basis of discussion.
