History 655:
U.S. Intellectual and Cultural History
Spring 2006 , Tuesday 2:30 - 5:00 pm
Synopsis:
This aim of this course is to provide an overview of the cultural history of British North America from colonization through the early Republic. Each week, in addition to considering a primary source or sources illuminating the week’s subject, we will sample classic and historical studies with a focus on exploring the enduring questions that have shaped the field. By the end of the semester, you should be conversant on the main themes, questions and scholars working in this field, and will have gained particular mastery of one subfield through your deeper, independent exploration of that topic. Course
requirements include: 1) Attendance and participation in weekly discussions; 2) Leadership of at least one weekly discussion; 3) three ca. 800-word book reviews, modeled after those in the AHR and JAH, for distribution to the class; and 4) one long (ca. 20-25 pp.) historiographical essay reviewing important and recent work in a subfield of early American cultural history,
due at the end of the semester along with an oral presentation to the class.
