History 646: Topics in Early American History

Synopsis:

This course is a kind of practicum in exposing and solving historiographical problems with research and argument.  Emphasis on using social history sources, methodology, use of the library, and writing.  Topics include servants in New England and the Chesapeake; Salem witchcraft and Puritan captivity narratives; mariners and the urban poor in Colonial America.  Three papers from seven to ten pages based chiefly on primary sources.  Three paperbacks required.
