History 697R:
ALANA Communities and Civil Rights
Fall 2004, Mon. 2:30 - 5:00 pm
Synopsis:
Community activism and Civil Rights in the 1960s and '70s are mostly discussed in terms of African American experiences. This course will look at how other communities, including Asian American, Latino/a, and Native American communities, articulated their concerns during this era. A comparative approach highlights different historical situations and struggles in these communities. We will also consider why some individuals and groups continue to distance themselves from terms such as "activist" or "feminist."
