History 603: Modern American Historiography

David Glassberg

Spring 2005, Tues. 2:30 - 5:00 pm

Synopsis:

This course will introduce you to the art of historical interpretation as practiced and discussed by the historical profession over 125 years, as well as solidify your knowledge of the major issues and events of United States history since 1877.  To that end, the course combines a methodological and chronological organization, discussing the emergence of social, cultural, intellectual, political, diplomatic and women=s history at the same time that we continue a chronological sweep up to the present.  We will conclude with a discussion of whether or not the development of new historical syntheses uniting these various sub-specialities is desirable, or even possible.  Students wanting to get a head start on the readings should begin with Peter Novic, That Nobel Dream: the Objectivity Question and the American Historical Profession.
