History 602: American Historiography Through the Civil War

Heather Cox Richardson

Spring 2005, Wed. 9:00 - 11:30 am

Synopsis:

This course explores different forms of historical analysis.  It begins with a general discussion of criticism and the craft of history, then deals with ways historians have thought about and attempted to present the past.  We will study the established schools of thought (Progressive, Consensus, and New Left, for instance), as well as approaches that do not fit neatly into such historiographical categories.  We will wrestle with such issues as the force of race and ethnicity, and the issues of narrative, as well as investigating new historiographical developments.
